- Fight Identity Theft is a commercial website by Dave Nielsen, a specialist in credit and the internet. It provides clear, simple information on what to do if you are a victim of identity theft and also includes news on the latest scams. In addition, the site gives directions on how to remove your name from mailing lists for pre-approved credit offers.
- FindLaw - Consumer Rights
- FindLaw is an extensive website that provides links to resources in over 30 areas of law. This web page connects directly to the area on consumer issues which includes the topic of identity theft.
- How Stuff Works
- How Stuff Works, publisher of the online Mobile Travel Guide and Consumer Guide, provides an overview of identity theft. This site clearly explains types of identity theft, methods used to steal identity, ways to protect yourself, and steps to take if your identity has been stolen.
- Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number
- The Social Security Administration has created this site to help with problems resulting from the theft of your Social Security number. Subjects covered include how to report use by another person, how to repair financial damage, and how to decide whether or not you need to apply for a new Social Security number.
- Identity Theft Resource Center
- The Identity Theft Resource Center provides guidance for victims of ID theft as well as those who are interested in protecting themselves, members of law enforcement and business owners. There is also a link to information about current scams and consumer alerts.
- Police Notebook
- The Police Notebook outlines common ways in which identity theft occurs, steps to take if you are a victim, and opt out information for pre-screened credit offers. Other helpful information includes a sample dispute letter for closing accounts, an ID fraud victim worksheet, and a lost or stolen wallet emergency checklist.
