Library customers to Bookstock 2013 on Saturday, October 5, 2013, 10:30 am – 3:30 pm at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar Avenue) will enjoy a firsthand account of America’s history from nationally renowned author and counterterrorism expert John Philip Mudd, who will be this year’s keynote speaker.

With a career in government stretching from 1985 to 2005, Mudd has been on the frontlines of America’s fight against terrorism through his roles with the Central Intelligence Agency. He started as an analyst specializing in South Asia and then the Middle East before eventually climbing to second-in-charge as deputy director of counterterrorism analysis in the Counterterrorist Center. Mudd later served as senior intelligence advisor of the Federal Bureau of Investigation through 2010, when he retired from government service as a notable contributor to our nation’s security and a recipient of numerous CIA awards. Currently, he is director of Global Risk at SouthernSun Asset Management in Memphis, Tennessee and sits on the advisory board of the National Counterterrorism Center and the Aspen Institute’s Homeland Security Group.

At Bookstock 2013, Mudd will discuss his recently published book Take Down: Inside the Hunt for Al Qaeda. Through his book and his Bookstock presentation, customers will experience the aftermath of 9/11, the years of threat, along with the intelligence that help to combat it.

“Americans are very interested in issues relating to national security and counterterrorism,” said Wang-Ying Glasgow, adult services coordinator and event organizer. “To have an author with an insider’s account is very exciting and relevant.”

Customers will meet and greet 40 other local authors with newly-published books while enjoying a festive environment with food trucks, live music, cooking demonstrations, and much more! Glasgow said, “Readers can come and discover new authors, be inspired, entertained, and informed. Each author has a compelling story to share.”

In addition to promoting and selling their work, Glasgow said local authors will benefit from the camaraderie that Bookstock will offer. “Whether it is by creative imagination of a fiction writer or a realistic account of a nonfiction writer, authors love to listen to their peers, exchange ideas, and share stories of their creative processes. Everyone – come and enjoy the festival!” she concluded.
