Calligraphy

During this course, participants will be introduced to the history and essential tools of calligraphy (the art of decorative handwriting). Participants will learn various techniques before completing a personalized keepsake.

Drawing Techniques: a Beginner’s Guide

Unlock the secrets of drawing through four essential line techniques during this hands-on course. As you develop, you’ll also learn how to add depth and dimension to your work. By the end of the course, you’ll have a portfolio of finished pieces.

Painting with Color & Nature

In this vibrant, hands-on course, participants will dive into the world of painting with a twist. They’ll master color blending, shading techniques and how to sketch and paint plants and trees with a fresh modern approach. Students will explore how to mix and layer colors to create bold transitions and depth, while learning to add dimension and texture through shading. By the end students will have a portfolio of colorful, nature-driven pieces to show off.
Instructor: Travis Hunter is a self-taught artist who has been hosting paint parties for kids and adults for the past four years. When he’s not inspiring creativity at events, he enjoys drawing, painting, and working on arts and crafts projects at home, including creating custom designs on clothing. Africa in the City is designed to teach members in the Memphis community about the history and culture of various communities in Africa. Food tastings, mini language lessons, and hands-on activities are features of the program.
Instructor: Tanisha Dudley-Williams is a teacher with Memphis Shelby County Schools. She has been in the education field for 25-years. In addition to having bachelor’s and master’s degrees she received her Teaching Africa Teacher Certificate through Boston University African Studies Center in 2022. In 2019 she spent time in Senegal as Fulbright Teachers for Global Classroom Fellow. Introduction to Fashion Design

Learn how to sketch fashion by using the proper measurements and format manually on paper. The course will include coloring and shading with no. 2 pencils, colored pencils, and color markers. Participants will learn to place and scan the drawing into photoshop to give their work a nice clean finish look. Discover how to create technical drawings in adobe illustrator.
Instructor: Patrice Muncel Shaw-Brunson has always had a passion for designing and sketching fashion illustrations. She received her BA degree in Fashion Design from the University of Memphis. Her favorite skill set learned was sketching illustrations manually, drawing digital in adobe photoshop, and technical drawing in adobe illustration. Instructor: Cameron Ross is a 23-year veteran in music education. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Arkansas State University and a Master of Music Education from The University of Memphis. Along with teaching, Cameron is an active performing in the Memphis area and across the country. He has also released two music projects that charted in the top 10 on the Billboard jazz charts. Many of his former students have gone on to be professional musicians and music educators.

Writing for Performances: From the Page to the Stage
(In-person)
This class/workshop will focus on dramatic writing culminating to presenting works on stage including poetry, short stories, and prose in a dramatic form.
Instructor: Levi Frazier, Jr. has been writing, producing, and directing for more than 50 years. He has had plays produced all over the country and in Europe. He won the Ostrander Award for Best Play (When it Rains) and won a Chattanooga Theatre Center playwriting contest. Frazier performed A Tribute to Richard Wright in Paris France.

Making a Career Out of Writing Books
(In-person)
This series will discuss how to turn your passion for writing into an ongoing career. You will learn how to network, get published and take advantage of writing opportunities.
Instructor: Douglas Pratt published his first novel, Blood Remembered, in 2011. Since then, he has published 26 novels. In 2020, prior to the pandemic, he went to writing full-time. Since then, he has had numerous best-selling books. In 2023, he launched his own publishing company, Manta Press. In addition, he is the co-host of the podcast The Two Authors’ Chat Show.
